A delicious crunchy beef roll filled with the goodness of ragout and stringy slow cooked beef. The Dutch eat it plain like a sausage. With or without mustard. As the Dutch love their bread, they often add a roll for lunch. The ‘Kroket’ is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Bitterballen, the smaller and rounder version of the ‘ Kroket’.
Ideally you eat this as a snack or tapas during 5 o’clock, Beer time! The name bitter was not given due to its bitter taste, it was given solely because of the drink that was served with the balls. The ‘ Bitter’ drink is a herb alcoholic drink. |
Basically this is a skinless sausage.
The Dutch eat it plain or with any kind of sauce they like.
Would you like to eat it like the Dutch?
Then you must ask for a Frikandel Special.
This way the Frikandel is cut open before deep frying the crunchy outer layer.
After this will be filled with Mayo, Curry and topped off with raw onions.
Special indeed…

Bamischijf , Nasibal or Loempia
the Dutch have a deep history with Asia.
The Dutch only twisted the delicious Asian food to something they were
a little more used to…
Most Dutch will know the saying about foreign food in the Netherlands ;
‘wat de boer niet kent, dat eet hij niet’
~ The Farmer does not eat what he doesn’t know...
However the Vietnamese Loempia (Springroll) was perfect as it is and so had to be on the menu.

When you ask for a ‘patatje met’ you will get Chips and Mayo.
if you would like something else than Mayo,
try one of the other classic options of sauce additions:
“Een patatje met pinda saus” | “Een patatje speciaal” |
If you wish a dip that is it a little less special, we do also serve gravy.
